Blisters for Bread

Peninsula School Feeding Association’s Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk is now in its 44th year. The Walk began as a fundraiser for PSFA by Savio College in Landsdowne. In 1972, it was decided to hold a really BIG walk and the various Lions Clubs in Cape Town came on board to help plan and implement the event. That year, 13,000 school children took part in the event, which covered 17 different routes around the Peninsula. Two hundred marshals, mostly comprised of Lions and Leos, marshalled the walk and all the clubs in the Peninsula participated in the event.

Today, Blisters for Bread is a major event on the Cape Town event’s calendar, attracting over 16,000 walkers from all walks of life, coming together in support of PSFA and the 326,000 children we feed every school day. The Lions Clubs are an integral part of this success. In 2011, PSFA raised R700,000 from the event, which is providing 370,000 meals to hungry children in underprivileged Western Cape schools this year. For the past 6 years, participation in Blisters for Bread has grown by 10% annually on average. This has resulted in a considerable amount of funds being raised.

Blisters for Bread 2012

Blisters for Bread will take place on Sunday, 26th August. The walk starts and finishes at Green Point Cricket Club on Vlei Road near the Stadium. Walkers may choose one of three distances, 5km, 10km and 15km, along the scenic Atlantic Seaboard. Support is garnered from the Lions and Leos to act as marshals for the event and help ensure walker safety and the success of the event.

How You Can Help

We are counting on the Lions and Leos to come out in their numbers to ensure the Walk’s success and in so doing feed more hungry children. The guidance and support received from the clubs over the many years has been invaluable. We anticipate a record-breaking crowd this year of 18,500 walkers. This will necessitate a larger number of marshals. We appeal to you and your club to help us make a difference in the lives of children throughout our Province by volunteering at the 2012 Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk.
