Bennie Smith was recently re-inducted as the president of the Wellington Lions Club. This will be his second term, and no, the idea is not to keep going until he succeeds! Lion Bennie had a very successful year as president. During his 2013/14 term the club was involved in numerous projects which saw R145 000 being spent in our immediate community on a variety of projects. 14 year old Charmaine Jagman was born with Spina Bifida, a developmental congenital disorder caused by the incomplete closing of the embryonic neural tube. This condition makes walking very difficult and causes Charmaine to fall often, resulting in painful injuries. The Wellington Lions has donated a wheelchair to the family to help Charmaine to move around more freely.

Once a year we treat 300+ of our seniors to a braai. The meat is prepared in our special way that has them coming back year after year! We invite seniors from all walks of life. Lots of hard work goes on in the background but the warm appreciation year after year makes it all worth while. André Victor and his band provided the music this year and it proved to be a hit! This year the traditional annual Christmas party for children from the communities of various Lions clubs was held at Intaka Island, Century City. The new venue is an ideal location with a large green lawn and interesting footpaths around the wetland area in which Intaka Island was built. With all our supplies, tools and equipment a few Wellington Lions took to the Porterville show grounds on Saturday, August 24, to participate in the town’s 150 year celebrations, hosted by the Porterville Lions Club. There were surprisingly many entries – around 20+ stalls. We made a lamb neck potjie and rounded it off with rice and sweet potatoes. Wellington Lions has a new president! The induction dinner was held on the 16th July at the charming and intimate venue, Up the Alley. The induction ceremony was performed by Cabinet Secretary Liz Houston and her unique touch made this a special occasion for the incoming president. The 96th Lions International Convention (July 5-9, 2013) by DG James Stigant We were pleasantly surprised by the large number of Lions from our club Wellington and other Lions from various zones and clubs who came to see us off at the Cape Town International Airport. After flying to Schipol we took a connecting flight to Hamburg and were welcomed there by the local Lions and the City of Hamburg. The four DG’s from A,B,C and D got together and joined class no 18 and were further taught the finer points for the coming DG year by PID Nesim Levi....
