The annual bowls competition between the Paarl- and Wellington Lions Clubs was recently held at the Wellington Bowls Club. Rain stayed away while we competed, chatted with old friends and ate like kings in unseasonal cool summer weather. The victor, when all the scores were tallied, was the Wellington Lions Club, proud to restore our damaged pride after last year’s loss! Here are some  photos of the evening:

The Wellington Lions put in some time during the past weekend to act as marshals and to man (and women) water points along the 110 km and 72 km routes. A fresh wind made things interesting but no less fun for those worked or cycled. At our watering point everyone who stopped for a drink was upbeat and having a ball. The Vancouver Cambie Lions Club is around 15 years old and most of the 36 members are Chinese business people. The visit was a very pleasant experience with everyone very warm and welcoming. We plan to stay in touch.

The past weekend (6 – 7 October 2012) the Wellington Lions Club provided some assistance at the Engen Dynamic Cycle Challenge at Nelsons Creek Wine Estate just outside Wellington. The Gravel Travel Mountain Bike Championship takes place on dirt roads in and around the farms and vineyards of Wellington, crosses the Bainskloof Pass road and then heads towards Groenberg Mountain. Peninsula School Feeding Association’s Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk is now in its 44th year. The Walk began as a fundraiser for PSFA by Savio College in Landsdowne. In 1972, it was decided to hold a really BIG walk and the various Lions Clubs in Cape Town came on board to help plan and implement the event. Wellington Lions Club and Franschhoek Lions sponsored two students from Wellington to attend the Sound of Africa youth exchange camp which is hosted by District B in the Magaliesberg.
